This classic will provide hours of fun (mixed with the occasional argument), ladling your children with life’s skills; problem solving, good sportsmanship, debating and artificial intelligence.

10 clean river rocks (collect your own or purchase by the bag at craft shops)
Square wooden dowels (buy two, around one metre each, and break them in half)
Paint – white, and two opposing colours of your choice
Paintbrush
Tub of water
Old cloth for cleaning the brush in between colours

1.    Paint your rocks, five of one colour, five of the other. (You might like to dry one side and come back to the other after the dowels).

2.    Paint the dowels white.

3.    Paint the other side of the rocks, wait for drying.

4.    When the rocks are dry, Team Stripes applies their decorative stripes.  Team Spots gets spotty.   It doesn’t have to be perfect, as long as there are two different colours it works.

5.    It’s the old naughts and crosses rules, get three of your rocks in a row; horizontal, vertical or diagonal and you’re the winner.

6.    Reset, swap rocks, and begin again.
