‘In Our Backyard’ | MLHD Hearing Voices Peer Group
If you hear voices, you are not alone. Studies show that around one in ten people will hear voices at some point in their lives. Hearing voices is a very personal experience and is different for everyone in terms of what the voices say and the life events that provoke them.
Self Help Group for Voice Hearers, Wagga Wagga, provides a safe and supportive place for people with lived experience of hearing voices, visions and other unusual sensory perceptions. This group runs fortnightly at Safe Haven, Wagga Wagga, providing an inclusive, supportive environment for people to share their experiences and engage in social activities. The group is facilitated by Murrumbidgee Local Health District, Mental Health Drug and Alcohol service, with the support of Wellways Australia and Melissa Roberts Foundation.
Over eight fortnights, participants explored art therapy at Unique State Art Space, with printmaking, drawing, painting and artist book sessions. After experimenting with new materials, artists developed a bird or animal for the ‘In Our Backyard’ mural, choosing to work with Gelli plate printmaking, watercolour, drawing and monoprint. Throughout the creative process artists shared stories, experiences and memories of these creatures in their surroundings.
